13. Appendices
13.1. Installing SDK and NET
SDK [.NET] 10 can be downloaded from dotnet.microsoft.com/download: Select version 10 (LTS), then the installer for your system ([Windows] x64, [macOS], [Linux]). With [Windows], you can also use the package manager [winget]:
For [Linux] ([Ubuntu], for example), the package [dotnet-sdk-10.0] is available in the distribution’s or Microsoft’s repositories. Verify the installation in a console ([PowerShell] or command prompt):
which should display a version number starting with 10. The SDK package contains everything you need: the [C#] compiler, the [ASP.NET Core] framework, and the [dotnet] tool ([dotnet new], [dotnet build], [dotnet run], [dotnet watch]...). The additional libraries ([NuGet] packages) are automatically downloaded from nuget.org the first time a project that declares them is compiled: an Internet connection is required for this.
13.2. Installing Visual Studio Code
[Visual Studio Code] is downloaded from code.visualstudio.com. Add the Microsoft extension [C# Dev Kit] (View > Extensions menu, then search for “C# Dev Kit”): This extension provides syntax highlighting and code completion for [C#] and [Razor], a list of projects in a solution (the “Solution Explorer” view), and the debugger. Open the [examples] folder or the case study folder (File menu / Open Folder); the integrated terminal (Terminal menu / New Terminal) allows you to run [dotnet] commands without leaving the editor. The F5 key runs the application under the debugger’s control.
13.3. Installing MySQL with Laragon
[Laragon] (laragon.org) installs a ready-to-use [MySQL] server (or [MariaDB]) ready for use, along with the [HeidiSQL] administration tool. After installation:
- the "Start All" button launches the [MySQL] server on port 3306;
- the user [root] has no password: these are the default values for the connection strings in Example 28 and the case study;
- the "Database" button opens [HeidiSQL], where the File / Run File SQL runs the scripts [dbpersons.sql] (Example 28) and [dbrdvmedecins2.sql] (case study).
In [Linux] or [macOS], install [MySQL] or [MariaDB] using the system’s package manager, and run the scripts using the command-line client [mysql]. With [MariaDB], specify its version in [appsettings.json] (key [MySql:ServerVersion], for example, [10.11.0-mariadb]).
13.4. Installing curl
[curl] is included with [Windows] 10 and 11, [macOS], and most [Linux] distributions. On [PowerShell], you must type [curl.exe], not [curl]: In older versions of [PowerShell], [curl] is an alias for another command ([Invoke-WebRequest]), which has different options.
